Welcoming Leon Springer to BMW i Ventures

Leon Springer, Analyst at BMW i Ventures

We are delighted to welcome Leon Springer to BMW i Ventures. Leon joins the firm at a moment when the boundaries between software and the physical world are rapidly disappearing—generative AI is no longer confined to the screen, and the industries that define how things are built, moved, and powered are being fundamentally reimagined. Leon's background spanning investment banking, public markets, and a deep intellectual curiosity about how technologies scale makes him a natural fit for the work we do at BMW i Ventures.

We sat down with Leon to learn more about his path to the firm and what he's most eager to explore.

Q: Could you share more about your background and what inspired you to join the BMW i Ventures team?

A:
I started my career in investment banking at Bank of America in London, where my initial plan was to stay on the public markets side working with later-stage companies through IPOs. But what increasingly interested me was the journey that happened before companies reached the public markets—how new technologies are developed and how industries evolve. BMW i Ventures was a unique opportunity to move closer to that innovation cycle and work at the intersection of technology, mobility, industrials, and venture investing.

Q: What macro trends or emerging technology sectors are you most passionate about diving into right now?

A:
I'm particularly excited about the intersection of AI and the physical world. While AI has already transformed software, I think some of the biggest opportunities over the next decade come from applying it to industries like manufacturing, mobility, logistics, and industrial infrastructure. I'm especially interested in technologies that make complex systems smarter, more autonomous, and more efficient.

Q: What are you most excited to take on as you step into this role?

A:
One of the things I'm most excited about is being immersed in the Bay Area ecosystem and learning from founders, operators, and investors who are pushing technology forward every day. BMW i Ventures also has an incredibly experienced team, and I'm looking forward to learning from colleagues who have spent years investing in and supporting some of the most innovative companies. For me, this role is a unique opportunity to accelerate my learning curve while getting a front-row seat to emerging technologies and the people building them.

Q: Outside of the startup ecosystem, what keeps you energized or inspired?

A:
Sports and exercise have always been a big part of my life and keep me grounded—whether it's working out, hiking, sailing, or skiing. Being active helps me recharge and often leads to my best thinking. I also love travelling and experiencing new places and cultures. Having just moved from London to San Francisco, I've been reminded how much growth can come from stepping into a completely new environment.

Q: What is a lesson or piece of advice that has stayed with you throughout your career?

A:
One idea that has always resonated with me is that the best way to learn is to put yourself in environments where you're surrounded by people who are smarter and more experienced than you. The biggest leaps in my career have come from being challenged by colleagues, mentors, and teams. I think this mindset is especially relevant to venture capital, where curiosity and continuous learning are just as important as having the right answers.

Q: Looking ahead, what are you most excited to build in this next phase of your career?

A:
At this stage, I'm honestly most excited about learning. No matter how experienced you become, there's always more to discover. I'm looking forward to developing a deeper understanding of emerging technologies, learning how great investors evaluate opportunities, and spending time with founders who are turning ambitious ideas into successful companies.
